Machine Embroidery Design Download Problems

The internet is a great place to find machine embroidery designs for downloading and use on your embroidery machine. There are literally thousands of sites to search and be able to find the perfect embroidery design that you can use. While there are several factors that go into finding the best design, do you really know what you are downloading?
When you download anything from the internet, you could possibly be giving someone access to your computer. While most sites are legitimate and won’t give you any problems, there are some sites that will take advantage of your computer if you download something from them.
So, what can you do to increase your security on your computer when you download embroidery machine designs?
One of the best ways to increase your computers security is to have an anti-virus program that is up to date. Just having the anti-virus software installed isn’t enough however, and you should schedule it to run at certain times. Scheduling a full system scan of your computer at least once a week is a good idea and can help save your computer from being attacked and taken over by a nasty virus.
Another great tip is to backup any important files that you have. Some files are designed to wipe out your computer instead of just taking it over or causing problems. Backing up those important files onto a CD or external hard drive is a great way to ensure that you have a copy of important files.
When you download files, do you download them into one central location? I have created a “downloads” folder on my desktop and use that to download all files into that one location. This is vital because I can then scan the folder, and files, with my anti-virus and anti-spyware software before opening the file. This has saved me several times from the headaches of having to reformat my computer.
Having anti-spyware software is another good idea. Spyware can be more of a problem these days, moreso than viruses. Spyware can wreak havoc on your computer and cause lots of different problems, usually with your web browser not working right, or computer locking up.
There have also been some reports of viruses causing problems with digital machine embroidery software. Sometimes they can attack the program and when you try to create a design, you will find that you can’t get it to stitch correctly. You better check and make sure that there isn’t a virus or other issue with the file.
If you are using Internet Explorer for your web browser, I won’t twist your arm to change to another browser, but let me tell you about my experience with it. When I was using IE exclusively, I was constantly fighting with spyware and viruses. Internet Explorer is notorius for having lousy safety and security settings by default. Another big problem with Internet Explorer is that it is heavily integrated into the Windows operating system. This means that it is more easily attacked from internet activity, and can cause your computer to crash more readily.
I downloaded the Firefox browser and haven’t had any problems since. Firefox is secure, not integrated with Windows, has tons of “plugins” that can provide lots of additional functionality for your use. Once you download Firefox, it will even copy your “Favorites” over in one step!
I hope you found some of these safety and security tips helpful for your machine embroidery design software and computer systems. I will try to write more about this as I have time, so check back soon!
